Two teams of St. John’s University students from The Lesley H. and William L. Collins College of Professional Studies competed against more than 90 teams from other colleges and universities nationwide and advanced to the final round of the Virtual Internship and Varied Innovative Demonstrations (VIVID) Cyber Competition, a prestigious event that challenges and inspires students through a series of cybersecurity exercises.
“VIVID was an amazing and intense experience,” said team member Brandon Singh. “I have only been on the team for a year, and already feel like I’ve learned so much.”
The teams were coached and mentored by Rahul S. Karnik ’93SVC, ’96MBA, APC 2001, Associate Director of Information Security and Adjunct Professor, Department of Business Analytics and Information Systems. Mr. Karnik guided the students through rigorous preparation for both the qualifiers in March and finals in November.
“Cybersecurity involves safeguarding systems, networks, data, and programs from digital threats. In recent years, the demand for cybersecurity professionals has surged,” explained Mr. Karnik. “Cybersecurity competitions and games offer an engaging, hands-on way for students to demonstrate and enhance their skills, providing valuable learning experiences beyond the classroom.”
He added, “I’m thrilled that both of our teams made it to the VIVID finals and performed exceptionally well. The teams put in tremendous effort leading up to the finals, enduring long and exhausting days throughout the competition. Yet, they remained focused and united. Teamwork is a crucial element of these competitions, and each event teaches us new lessons in various aspects of cybersecurity. I’m incredibly proud of every team member."
The finals were held virtually during the week of November 11 at the Georgia Cyber Range in Augusta, GA, where 14 teams competed in a range of challenges, providing invaluable real-world experience. After three months of intense preparation, one of the St. John’s teams achieved an impressive eighth ranking, placing in the top 10.
“On the first day of the competition, I was anxiously questioning if I even belonged there with the rest of my peers and competitors,” said Brandon. “But after the incredible time we had, I want to try this again—and next time, I know my team and I will work harder to land a higher spot, maybe even number one!”
